How to get cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews in Australia
A practical field guide, grounded in our own Australian data: what the engines actually cite here, the moves that earn a citation, and which engine to start with.
The short answer
How do you get cited by AI answer engines in Australia?
Key takeaways
Engines cite the clearest, best-supported, well-structured passage. Make yours the obvious one to lift.
In our June 2026 test, directories and platforms won most Australian citations; independents were rarely named.
Start with Perplexity. It cited about thirteen sources per answer, the lowest barrier to a first citation.
Original data is the lever. A page with something only you can say is the page an engine reaches for.
The data
What our Australian data shows
Twelve buyer questions, three engines, one open door.
Most advice on AI citations is based on the United States. We wanted a read on our own market, so in June 2026 we put twelve real Australian buyer questions through Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google AI Mode and logged what each answer cited. Three findings shaped everything below.
Sources Perplexity cites
About thirteen per answer, versus roughly two from ChatGPT. The lowest-barrier place to earn a first citation.
Went to brand or vendor sites
Often the platform the question was about, with the rest spread across directories, editorial and social.
Times an independent expert won
Across twelve questions a local agency should own, the engines named directories and platforms instead.
The full method and results are in our study of what AI assistants cite when Australians ask buyer questions. The takeaway for this guide is simple: the field is wide open, and structure plus original substance is how you claim it.
The moves
The moves that earn a citation
Earning a citation is not luck. The engines retrieve from the live web and lift the passage they trust most. These are the moves that make yours that passage, in the order we run them.
Lead with the answer
Open each page and section with a clear, self-contained answer of forty to sixty words. That block is what the engine lifts.
Add something only you have
Your own data, a client result or a tested process. Original substance is the single strongest reason to be cited over the next page.
Write for extraction
Headings as the questions people ask, short quotable passages, lists and tables. Make every section stand alone.
Cite your sources
Quote figures, name sources and link to them. Verifiable trust is what an engine looks for before it quotes you.
Mark it up
Valid Article, FAQ and Organisation schema so the engines can parse your structure and authorship cleanly.
Earn off-site agreement
Get cited and reviewed in the directories, publications and communities the engines already trust. Answers favour agreement across sources.
Keep it current
Around 85 per cent of AI citations come from content published within two years. Review and update on a regular cycle.
Let the crawlers in
Allow GPTBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot and the rest in robots.txt, so your content can be read and cited at all.
Write the one sentence that answers the question so clearly that the engine cannot improve on it. That sentence is what gets you cited.Anthony Betzis, Founder
The order
Which engine to start with
Do not chase every engine at once. Our data points to a clear starting order.
Start with Perplexity
It cited about thirteen sources per answer in our test, far more than ChatGPT. The most citations available means the easiest first win.
Easiest first winThen Google AI Overviews
Most Australians still start on Google, so its AI answers carry the most reach. Win them once your structure and authority are proven.
Most reachThen ChatGPT
Citation-thin and harder to crack, so bank wins elsewhere first, then push into it as your authority compounds.
Hardest, lastMeasurement
How to measure AI citations
Track presence and trust, not just visits, because a good AI answer can satisfy a question without a click.
- Citation share. How often you are named across the engines for your questions.
- Brand mentions. Where and how the engines describe you.
- Impressions. Rising visibility even when clicks compress.
- Assisted conversions. Enquiries that began with an AI answer naming you.

How to get cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews in Australia FAQs
How do I get my business cited by ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?
Give the engines the clearest passage to lift: a self-contained, answer-first response backed by verifiable data and named sources, on a well-structured page with clean schema, and earn agreement from other trusted sites. Original substance is the strongest single lever.
Which AI engine is easiest to get cited by in Australia?
Perplexity. In our June 2026 test it cited about thirteen sources per answer, far more than ChatGPT, so there are simply more citations available to win. Start there, then move to Google AI Overviews for reach.
Do AI engines cite Australian businesses?
Often not the ones you would expect. In our test of twelve Australian buyer questions, directories and big platforms won most citations and independent experts were rarely named. The field is open for businesses that structure and earn citations first.
How long does it take to get cited by AI?
Well-structured pages on a credible domain can start earning citations within weeks. Durable citation share builds over months as topical authority, freshness and off-site consensus compound.
Does original data really help with AI citations?
Yes. Original data, a client result or a first-hand point of view is the one thing AI cannot copy from everyone else, which is exactly why an engine reaches for it. It is the most reliable way to earn a citation over a generic page.
